Layered Security

There are two ways to look at keyway security. The first, administrative security, is about key control. It relates to the barriers you put in place to prevent unwanted duplication. The second, physical security, is based on design features that determine the cylinder’s resistance to bypass through picking, bumping or drilling.

Utilizing Schlage’s layered security approach, you can apply different cylinder types and levels of administrative control on a door by door basis throughout a facility under a single keyway family. Upgrading Open and Legacy Keyways

It's important to recognize that a key system 15 years or older has likely lost its patent protection. As keyway designs age past their patent life of 20 years, risk of aftermarket key blanks coming available increases year after year. The first step to ensuring better security is to learn about the patent status of your key system and, if out-of-date, consider replacement or upgrading specific entries.

Schlage offers two easy paths to upgrade that allow you to selectively add patent protections back to sensitive areas and critical points of entry. Everest 29 keyways are fully backward compatible to legacy Everest keyways and the highly restricted, geographically exclusive Primus cylinders are available for all Classic Obverse, legacy Everest and Everest 29 keyways.

High Security Solutions

A true high security cylinder will carry a UL 437 listing which is the industry standard for high security. This means the cylinder has undergone UL's stringent testing and is proven pick- and drill-resistant to withstand extreme physical attacks. Physical security though, is only part of what is needed to have a high security key system. Equally important is administrative security. This relates to the barriers put in place to eliminate unwanted key duplication. HIgh security in a Schlage key system involves the application of Primus cylinders.

Primus UL 437 cylinders feature restricted access to unique factory-milled side bitting on the key that can be owned at a local, regional, or even national level, two independent locking mechanisms in the cylinder, and added drill pins behind the cylinder face.
