Perimeter Entry Security

In higher education, controlling access is typically balanced with a convenient student experience. Most colleges and universities use a smart credential (campus ID card) or mobile student id that can be used for building access, dining, vending, library, and more.  Primary entrances should have the capability to be monitored and can inlcude MT Series card readers, as well as software from one of our industry leading Physical Access Control System (PACS) providers.  Secondary entrances can also be monitored by upgrading to AD-400 wireless exit trim.  

Equally important is the supporting key system particularly on perimeter entrances. Barriers to key duplication and proper key control along with upgraded physical security in the cylinders is essential. Here, the use of Primus Security Upgrade is recommended.

Lockdown Capable Solutions

Making students, staff and visitors feel safe and secure is critical to learning and development. On most campuses, lockdown capability is a component of the larger security and safety plan.

At the local level, lockdown can be initiated immediately at the opening with ND or L Series locks featuring highly visible interior locked status indication options.  The CO-220 classroom locks enable a teacher to activate lockdown from across a room using a remote fob.

When centralized lockdown is desired, an Electronic Access Control system can be deployed with software from one of our PACS software alliances.  With EAC, it is common to deploy wired MTB Readers on the perimeter entry points and upgrade to AD400 or NDE wireless locks on the interior doors.  

Already have HID® iCLASS® or Seos® credentials already in place?  Choose a model with HID credential support inlcuding NDEBSi, LEBSi or AD400 with SiK reader.   

Electronic Access Control Solutions

For real-time control and visibility of door status, an Electronic Access Control system can be deployed with software from one of our PACS software alliances. Primary and secondary building entrances may be unlocked during school hours, but should be monitored and controlled in the event lockdown is needed. Use MT card readers on perimeter doors with Schlage MIFARE® DESFire EV® credentials.

To extend EAC deeper into the building, including residence halls, classrooms and offices, upgrade to AD400 or NDE wireless locks.  Already have HID® iCLASS® or Seos® credentials in place?  Choose a model with HID credential support inlcuding NDEBSi, LEBSi  or AD400 with SiK reader.   

Credential Solutions & Services

Electronic access control solutions center around the credential technology. To reduce risk of duplication, look for credentials with enhanced encryption like Schlage MIFARE® DESFire® EV cards and fobs. Choose Custom Artwork to personalize id cards with the school logo and colors. For campuses with mixed hardware, talk to one of our electronic experts about Custom Encryption Keys which enables smart credentials to work across devices from multiple manufacturers.

Mobile Solutions

Students enjoy the convenience of using a smart phone for just about everything.  Mobile student id is the most secure way for students to get around campus with the ID they're used to carrying. This new feature will allow students, faculty and staff at select universities to add their student ID cards to their Apple Wallet or Google Pay.

Schlage has a full portfolio of hardware compatible with mobile student id including AD400, NDE and LE wireless locks, MTB readers, and RC reader controllers. 

Key Systems

Colleges and universities can save money using Schlage's layered security approach which allows you to incorporate Primus® Security upgrade cylinders alongside existing cylinders with keyways that may no longer be patent protected such as Schlage C Classic Obverse or legacy Everest keyways. Even a large campus with multiple types of cylinder formats can achieve Primus levels of security using Everest 29 SL cylinders. SL fits the space of a Conventional or FSIC cylinder while sharing the same restricted Everest 29™ keyways of an SFIC 7-pin format.

In any new key system, look for patent protected designs and/or restricted keyway products that will allow you a means to selectively upgrade to a system like Primus where you get the best of both physical security and prevention of unwanted duplication.  

Residence Halls

The student population that reside in residence halls is always changing. To improve efficiency, many campuses have upgraded to wireless electronic locks which eliminate the need for re-keying at the end of each semester. The student's campus card or mobile student id can be used for access. The AD400 can be configured with multi-factor authentication, meaning that both a valid card plus a specific PIN number are required to confirm the user's identity.   

Storm Shelter Solutions

Campuses in tornado and hurricane prone areas need defined sheltering spaces for students and faculty to gather. The right solution for entries depends on the kind of shelter and level of protection required. Allegion offers a complete range of windstorm solutions from Schlage mechanical and electronic locks to Von Duprin exit devices and the Steelcraft doors they go on.

Schlage hurricane wind and impact locking solutions include cylindrical ALX and ND Series, mortise L Series, electronic wired or wireless AD Series, and wireless Control, LE, or NDE electronic locks. The L Series includes the LM9300 multi-point lock which, when paired with a Steelcraft Paladin door, also meets the stringent FEMA P-361/FEMA P-320/ICC 500 requirements, withstanding 250 mph windspeeds and 15 lb projectile impacts at 100 mph.
